Description
Velier released this Hampden as The Younger, a 300cl format drawn from the LROK marque, distilled in 2018 and aged four years in ex-bourbon at an accessible 47%. LROK is a mid-range Hampden mark, fruity and estery without reaching the heaviest funk, which makes this a friendly entry into the distillery.
Molasses-based and from the classic double-retort pot still, it shows banana, ester, tropical fruit and varnish on the nose, then more tropical fruit, ester and orange peel over light wood on the palate, with a fruity, faintly metallic, fruitcake finish. The youth and modest strength keep it bright and easy rather than punishing. Certified unsweetened, it is a well-priced, characterful Hampden that suits drinkers exploring Jamaican funk, equally good neat, over ice or as the loud heart of a cocktail.
