Description
Velier, the Genoese house most associated with collectible rum, bottled this Hampden HLCF distilled in 2020 and aged three years in Trelawny. Hampden is the reference point for high-ester Jamaican funk, all pot still, and the HLCF marque sits in the upper register of ripe banana, pineapple and acetone.
The twist is the sherry cask, which adds honeyed sweetness, black tea and a herbal depth over the distillery's tropical fruit. Distilled from molasses on a double-retort pot still and bottled at 63.8% without added sugar, it drinks young and vivid, with firm oak tannins and big fruit jostling against the alcohol. Three years of tropical ageing gives colour and grip but not full polish, so this rewards an experienced palate happy to ride the power and let the fruit and sherry settle in the glass.
