A 65 year old Hampden from Velier, distilled in 1959 and aged in demijohn, vivid with pineapple, banana, honey and tropical fruit over gentle old oak, a syrupy, fruit driven slice of history at high proof.
Description
Bottled by Velier, the most prestigious name in collectible rum, this Cees Van Wees release is a 65 year old Hampden distilled in 1959 from the historic van Ween stock. After early cask time it spent decades in glass demijohn, a neutral vessel that effectively paused maturation, which is how a spirit this old stays so vivid rather than collapsing into oak.
The pure pot still character survives intact, with bright pineapple, banana, honey and tropical fruit dominating over subtle aged wood and spice. At a hefty 71.9 percent the spirit is powerful and concentrated, finishing syrupy and honeyed with the fruit lingering long. The sugar content is not stated, though the profile is driven by ester and cask rather than additives. A rare, historic Hampden for seasoned drinkers who can handle the strength and want fruit over oak.
