A coconut driven Foursquare at full cask strength, layering vanilla, dried fruit and dark chocolate over firm oak, distilled on pot and column stills in Barbados, tropically aged fourteen years and bottled unsweetened by Velier at 61%.
Description
This is a 2003 Foursquare bottled by Velier, the Genoese house Luca Gargano built into the most respected name in collectible rum. It is a single blended rum in the Bajan manner, marrying heavy double retort pot still spirit with cleaner column distillate from one distillery, then matured fully in the Barbados tropics for fourteen years. Velier bottles it the way it bottles everything, at cask strength with no sugar, colouring or chill filtration.
The base is molasses, aged in ex-bourbon oak where the island heat drives fast, deep extraction and a high angel's share. That shows in the glass as coconut and vanilla over dark chocolate, caramel and dried fruit, with assertive oak and a tropical, spicy finish that runs long. At 61% it carries real weight, so a few drops of water or some time open lets the richer fruit unfold. It reads as a benchmark expression of the elegant, balanced Foursquare profile, scaled up to full power.
