Velier Diamond S 1981

Velier, the defining name in collectible rum under Luca Gargano, bottled this 1981 Diamond at full proof after three decades of ageing in the Caribbean heat. The Diamond stills sit at the lighter, cleaner end of the Guyanese range, but extended tropical maturation has loaded this one with weight, colour and depth far beyond its origins.

Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon, it opens on vanilla, caramel and tropical pineapple before turning to dark chocolate, leather and tobacco, with a finish of barrel char, cocoa and coffee. At 60.1% the proof is high yet the layers keep arriving, each sip shifting. This is a slow, focused pour for experienced drinkers, a tropically aged Velier Demerara of the kind that built the bottler's reputation.
