A cask strength 15 Year Old Diamond and Port Mourant blend from Velier at 52.3%, dense and smoky with coffee, dark caramel, leather, liquorice and dried fruit, closer to old Navy style than an easy sipper.
Description
Velier bottled this 1999 as a blend of the heavy Port Mourant double wooden pot still and the cleaner Diamond stills, tropically aged in the Caribbean heat. From Luca Gargano's Velier, the defining name in old Demerara, it leans toward the dense, oily, navy-style end of the spectrum.
Distilled from molasses across pot and column stills and matured in Port casks, it pours dark and drinks dense at 52.3%: caramel, liquorice, wood and smoke on the nose, then dried fruit, leather, caramel and roasted notes on the palate, finishing on herbs, liquorice, prune and oak. Bottled unsweetened, it is rich, smoky and oily, the Port Mourant heaviness arriving first before the more caramelised Diamond fruit emerges. This is a deeply satisfying, contemplative sipper for experienced drinkers who want old-school Demerara weight rather than an easy pour.
