Licorice, dark chocolate, dried plum, leather and old oak, a tropically aged cask-strength Diamond from Velier at 53.1%, an atypical charred-cask bottling that drinks dark, heavy and oily, savoury rather than sweet.
Description
A Diamond from Velier, distilled in 1999 and tropically aged fifteen years, this one marked by an unusual charred-cask maturation that sets it apart from the rest of the Velier Diamond run. The result is a less sweet, more savoury take on the still.
The ex-bourbon wood, given extra char, drives it dark and heavy, with licorice, dark chocolate, dried plum, leather and old oak, finishing on coffee and timber. Bottled unsweetened at 53.1% after years in the Guyanese heat, it is oily and intense, closer to a classic old school Demerara than to the coconut and vanilla profile of its siblings. Those who love licorice and leather in their Guyana rum will find a benchmark here, a dark and contemplative pour built for slow, focused sipping.
