A thirty five year old Clarendon MMW from Velier at 63.1%, a Wedderburn marque grown deep and dry with age, old oak, leather, menthol and dark chocolate over restrained tropical fruit and warm baking spice, a benchmark of mature tropical Jamaica.
Description
Velier of Genoa, the most prestigious name in collectible rum, bottled this Clarendon MMW from the 1984 vintage as a single cask at 63.1%, tropically aged, full proof and unsweetened. At thirty five years it is a profoundly mature Jamaican in the Wedderburn idiom, the kind of old, dry, high strength rum that drinkers chase for its depth.
Molasses fermentation and Clarendon's pot still character laid the foundation, and three and a half decades in ex-bourbon oak under Caribbean heat have driven it into deep wood territory. The nose carries old oak, barrel spice and citrus, the palate is woody, spicy and bitter with leather and menthol, and the finish runs to oak, dark chocolate and more citrus. The tropical fruit is restrained now, ceding to wood and spice, yet it never tips into a tired wood bomb. Immense, dry and contemplative, this is mature Clarendon at full stretch.
