A heavy mark Caroni from the closed Trinidad distillery, drawn from 1994 stock and aged 26 years before Velier bottled it cask strength at 58%, single cask, unsweetened, ex-bourbon oak.
Description
Caroni closed on the Caroni plain in 2003, and the casks Luca Gargano of Velier rescued from its abandoned bond turned a defunct state distillery into the most mythologised name in rum. This Paradise #8 is part of that finite tranche, a 1994 distillate from the Guyana Stock holdings, matured 26 years and bottled by Velier as a single cask without sugar or colour. At 58% and full proof, it sits in heavy Caroni territory, where the house style typically runs to tar, diesel, machine oil and asphalt over dark dried tropical fruit, smoke and deep oak. Expect an oily, savoury and dense pour rather than a soft one, the archetypal industrial Trinidad rum from a source that cannot be made again.
