A twenty-four year full-proof Caroni from Velier’s Paradise line, blending tropical fruit, tar, menthol and caramel over deep oak, richly layered and intense, a benchmark 1996 for seasoned drinkers at 68.1%.
Description
Caroni is the legendary closed distillery of Trinidad, established in 1918 on the Caroni plain and shut down in 2003. After Luca Gargano of Velier found its forgotten casks in the abandoned bond, the house bottled a finite tranche at full proof and championed tropical ageing, making Caroni the most mythologised name in rum. This is a single cask from the Paradise series, a 1996 vintage held twenty-four years.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled without added sugar, it carries the full weight of the heavy Caroni style with unusual depth. The aroma layers rubber and tar with dried and tropical fruit, the palate brings the same dark interplay with vanilla, and the finish folds tropical fruit and menthol into the tar and rubber. It stays powerful and dark throughout, yet a menthol freshness and a long, refined close lift it beyond the merely industrial. This is a dense, demanding pour for drinkers who already know the style, asking for small neat measures at 68.1%.
