Velier Caroni Paradise #3 (Guyana Stock) 1994

Caroni is the legendary closed Trinidad distillery, shut in 2003 and immortalised when Velier rescued thousands of casks from its abandoned bond and bottled them at full proof. This Paradise number three release draws on the 1994 vintage, a heavy Trinidad rum carried to 26 years of tropical ageing and presented unsweetened at 52.8%.

Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it shows what long ageing in Caribbean heat does to the style, pushing dryness and tar to the front over smoky petrol, bicycle-tube rubber and a fine thread of dried fruit. The profile is medicinal and bitter in the best Caroni sense, the wood deep and the finish very long. This is a serious, uncompromising bottle for seasoned enthusiasts, intense and layered yet relentlessly funky and oak-driven, a reference point for what extended tropical maturation gives this heavy Trinidad style.
