A heavy 1996 Caroni from Velier, the most mythologised name in rum, packed with tar, rubber and fuel over dark tropical fruit and tobacco, unsweetened at full proof 60.8 percent after 24 years.
Description
Few bottles carry the weight of a Velier Caroni. Luca Gargano's Genoese house rescued thousands of forgotten casks from the abandoned Trinidad distillery after it closed, and this Paradise No. 12 from the celebrated 1996 vintage is part of that finite, deeply collectible legacy. Drawn from a single ex-bourbon cask, it was bottled additive-free at full proof, 60.8 percent, after 24 years of tropical ageing.
This is heavy Caroni in full voice. The molasses spirit, matured in ex-bourbon oak in Caribbean heat, hits with tar, rubber and a dirty, fuel-like intensity over milk chocolate, caramelised sugar, dried fruit and tobacco. The palate stays oily and dense with tar, tropical fruit and rubber, the finish woody and faintly bitter with the fruit lingering. It is demanding and unpolished by design, trading refinement for sheer power and character, a serious bottling for slow, attentive sipping and comparison with other 1996 Caronis rather than casual drinking.
