Velier Caroni Paradise #1 1996

Velier is the Genoese house behind the Caroni revival, the bottler that found the forgotten casks in the abandoned Trinidad bond and championed tropical ageing, and this Paradise single cask from the 1996 vintage is full-proof and additive-free, drawn after twenty-six years. Caroni itself closed around 2003, which makes every release from this finite stock a piece of a closing story.

Matured in ex-bourbon oak in the Caribbean heat, it shows the distillery's industrial signature, tar, rubber and a vegetal undertone, but holds it in check beneath ripe tropical fruit, caramel and deep cacao. The integration is the point here: at 62.7% the strength is folded in rather than thrown, and the finish runs very long, returning to tar and fruit in equal measure. This is Caroni in its more refined register, dense and oily yet balanced, rewarding patient sipping over several minutes.
