Velier Caroni Heavy Rum HTR 1992

Velier bottled this Caroni from the 1992 vintage, drawing on the closed Trinidad distillery whose finite, tropically aged casks Velier turned into legend. At eighteen years and 61.2%, this is heavy Caroni at full power, dense and uncompromising, a benchmark of the style.

The molasses spirit, matured in ex-bourbon oak in the heavy marque, opens on tar, rubber, vanilla and solvents. The palate is thick with rubber and tar, caramel and a nutty edge, while dark and tropical fruit and spice build underneath, and the finish runs woody and long on liquorice, tar and mint. Added sugar is unconfirmed but the rum reads dry. The diesel-and-tar core is fully present yet wrapped in richer fruit and polish than many siblings, with the alcohol remarkably well integrated for the strength. This is a slow-sipping bottle for drinkers who want one of the most complete expressions of heavy Caroni and a finish that lingers and lingers.
