An 18 Year Old 1992 Heavy Caroni dense with tar, rubber, diesel and menthol over ripe tropical fruit, tropically aged and bottled by Velier with a creamy texture and a long, powerful finish at 55%.
Description
Caroni closed its Trinidad gates in 2003, and the casks Velier carried from the silent warehouse became rum legend. This bottling draws on the heavy 1992 vintage, among the earliest and most revered Caroni years, matured 18 years in the tropics and bottled at 55%.
Tropical ageing in ex-bourbon oak gives a dense, classic reading of the industrial style. The aroma layers tar, leather and tobacco over ripe tropical fruit, with diesel, cooked banana and bicycle-tyre notes weaving through, the palate turns tarry and leathery with rubber and real depth, and the finish stays smoky, rubbery and faintly bitter. Apple and pear notes add lift and balance, and the texture is notably creamy with the alcohol beautifully knit at this strength. Powerful yet smooth, it is a deep, harmonious reading of early-90s Caroni that drinks dangerously well for drinkers who love the heavy style.
