A famously balanced Velier Caroni from the 1992 vintage, 20 years of tropical ageing weaving tar, rubber and leather with cherries, dark fruit, herbs and chocolate, bone dry at 55% and a long, harmonious heavy Trinidad sipper.
Description
Velier bottled this Heavy Caroni from the 1992 vintage, drawn at 20 years and presented at 55%. It comes from the Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003 and was rescued by Luca Gargano, and the early-1990s vintages are among the most admired releases of the entire Caroni run.
Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak under tropical heat, it shows the industrial profile in well-judged proportion. Tar, rubber and leather form the spine, balanced by cherries, dark fruit, herbs and chocolate, with spice and oak running through. The texture is dense and the rum is bone dry, the 55% making it expressive yet relatively composed for a heavy Caroni. The finish is very long, tarry and woody. This vintage has a reputation for harmony, the dirt and the fruit sitting in even balance rather than one overwhelming the other, a deep, rewarding sipper for drinkers who want classic Caroni character with real poise.
