Description
A Velier Caroni from the 1989 vintage at 16 years, carrying the Heavy mark, HTR. Velier, the Italian house that rescued Caroni's abandoned casks after the distillery closed in 2003, set the template for these tropically aged, full proof bottlings that collectors prize.
This is a gentler, less dirty side of Caroni than the name might suggest. Solvent and tar appear on the nose alongside vanilla and coconut, the palate is creamy and roasted with dried fruit and cocoa, and the finish turns warm and woody with cherry and a touch of rubber. The industrial core is dialled back and wrapped in sweeter, softer notes, making a balanced if still intense pour at 62%. Tropically aged in ex-bourbon oak.
