A deep, elegant Velier Caroni from the 1985 vintage, 21 years layering tar, rubber and leather with caramel, toffee, chocolate and dried fruit over fine oak, full proof at 58.8% and a complex, unforgettable old-school heavy Trinidad.
Description
Velier bottled this Heavy Caroni from the 1985 vintage, drawn at 21 years and presented at full proof, 58.8%. It comes from the Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003 and was rescued by Luca Gargano, and the 1980s vintages are prized for combining the industrial profile with the depth that long tropical ageing brings.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak under Caribbean heat, it leads on vanilla, tar, rubber and liquorice, then opens into a richer middle of dark chocolate, leather, caramel and toffee with dried fruit and a roasted, mechanical-workshop edge. Baked apple and a hint of pastry flicker behind, and the finish runs long on coffee, oak and cocoa. The 58.8% is powerful but carries an old-school elegance, the dirt expressive yet framed by genuine refinement. Bottled to be sipped slowly and attentively, this is a complex, deep and memorable Caroni for drinkers who love the heavy style with maturity and balance behind it.
