A legendary twenty-four-year Caroni from the 1982 vintage, very dry and oak-forward with tar, rubber, leather and anise over toffee, aged in ex-bourbon and bottled at full proof, 58.3%, by Velier.
Description
Velier bottled this Caroni from the 1982 vintage, an old and revered expression of the Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003 and gained its myth through Velier's finite, tropically aged tranche. At twenty-four years and 58.3%, it is a dry, deeply oak-driven Caroni, full proof and built for the long haul.
The molasses spirit, matured in ex-bourbon oak in the heavy style, leads on rubber and tar with vanilla and oak behind. The palate is dense with tar, leather, wood and a thread of caramel, and the finish stays on barrel, tar, rubber and toffee. Added sugar is unconfirmed, but the profile reads bone-dry and wood-forward, with the classic industrial DNA fully present, tobacco, roasted nuts and dried fruit folded in. This is a slow-sipping bottle for drinkers who chase the driest, most concentrated heavy Caroni and a finish that seems to go on without end.
