A historic 34 year Velier Caroni from the 1974 distilling season, the quintessence of the heavy style in tar, bicycle-tube rubber, machine oil and varnish over subtle fruit and caramel, full proof at 66.1% and an iconic, monumental sipper.
Description
This is one of the most storied Velier Caroni releases, drawn from the 1974 distilling season and aged 34 years at full proof before bottling at 66.1%. It predates the modern Caroni revival and comes from the legendary Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003, a survivor of one of the oldest seasons still encountered in the glass.
Tropically aged in ex-bourbon oak across more than three decades, it reads almost as the distilled essence of the heavy style. Tar, bicycle-tube rubber, machine oil and varnish dominate from nose to finish, with deep, tannic oak and only a discreet thread of tropical fruit and caramel for contrast. Despite its age the strength remains formidable, the rum dense and powerful, yet the older fruit and a touch of sweetness lend an elegance the younger releases rarely match. The finish is enormous and resinous. A monumental, historic Caroni for the most dedicated drinkers of the dirty Trinidad style.
