Velier Caroni Édition Whisky Live Paris 2025 2000

Caroni was the legendary Trinidad distillery on the plain south of Port of Spain, closed in 2003 and resurrected when Velier rescued thousands of forgotten casks from the abandoned bond. This 2000 vintage was drawn for Whisky Live Paris 2025, a single cask of 18 years bottled at 50.6% and left unsweetened, presenting the recognisable industrial character in a softer register than the brutal full proofs.

Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it carries the house markers of tar, rubber and leather over tobacco and dried fruit, with a thread of menthol running through nose and palate. Time spent in a glass demi-john before bottling has rounded the edges, so the diesel and asphalt read as restrained rather than aggressive. The reduced strength makes it approachable, a slow sipper that trades raw power for balance while keeping the dirty workshop signature intact.
