A full proof 1998 Caroni of tar, glue and smoky barrel over vanilla, menthol and a savoury, bacon-like edge, tropically aged 22 years and bottled by Velier at a towering 68.4% without any sweetening.
Description
Caroni is the legendary Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003, its forgotten casks rescued from the abandoned warehouse by Luca Gargano of Velier and bottled over a finite run that turned the name into rum mythology. This Employees release, named for a member of the old workforce, draws on the prized Heavy marque from the 1998 vintage and was matured in the Caribbean heat for 22 years before bottling at 68.4%.
Tropical ageing in ex-bourbon oak concentrates everything, yielding the archetypal industrial Caroni signature of tar, rubber and barrel smoke lifted by caramel and a glue-like top note. The palate turns drier and more savoury here, with menthol, meat and a bacon edge crossing the dark fruit, while the finish runs long on tar, smoke and roasted wood. Unsweetened and uncompromising at full proof, it rewards a long rest in the glass and a patient, focused approach.
