A 1996 Caroni at navy strength, selected by Velier from the closed Trinidad distillery, dense with tar, rubber, dark tropical fruit, caramel and vanilla, bottled unsweetened at a full 57.18% and built to reward time in the glass.
Description
This is a heavy Caroni from the 1996 vintage, taken to twenty years and bottled by Velier, the Genoese house whose rescue of the abandoned Trinidad distillery turned it into the most mythologised name in rum. Caroni closed in 2003, so its stock is finite, and Velier's bottlings are tropically aged, full proof and free of any added sugar, colour or flavouring.
This is the archetypal heavy Trinidad profile. The nose carries tar, rubber and vanilla over tropical fruit, the palate is oily and dense with tar, dark fruit, caramel and spice, and the finish runs long with barrel char, rubber and roasted notes. At 57.18% it is powerful but balanced, and it genuinely opens with air, the dirty industrial register softening into fruit and depth after a long rest in the glass. A serious pour for drinkers who already love heavy Caroni or funky Jamaican rum and want the full oily, tarry character at strength.
