Velier Caroni 32nd Release Heavy Rum HTR 1998

Caroni closed in 2003, and Velier's bottlings of its rescued Trinidad casks set the reference for full-proof, tropically aged rum. This release pours from the heavy 1998 vintage, matured 16 years in the Caribbean heat and bottled at 64.5%, a classic reading of the late-90s style that fans treat as a benchmark.

Maturation in ex-bourbon oak under tropical conditions gives the archetypal industrial signature, tar, oil and rubber over smoky wood and dark chocolate on the nose, then smoke, dark chocolate, tar and barrel across a dense, oily palate. Dark and dried fruits and a pastry-like sweetness keep it from turning austere, and the finish stays long on smoke, roast and caramel. Oily, intense and built for slow drinking, it offers all the dirty character of 1998 Caroni with just enough fruit and sweetness to stay deeply satisfying.
