A Velier Caroni from the 1996 vintage, 17 years of tropical ageing giving an oily weave of tar, leather and dark chocolate over burnt oak and subtle fruit, bottled at 55% for the heavy-rum character with extra balance and chocolatey depth.
Description
This is a classic Velier Caroni from the 1996 vintage, part of the run that followed Luca Gargano's rescue of the abandoned Trinidad distillery after it closed in 2003. Tropically aged 17 years and bottled at 55%, it sits at a strength that keeps the heavy profile expressive while staying relatively composed.
Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak under Caribbean heat, it shows the oily, industrial signature these bottlings are loved for. Tar, leather and dark wood lead, with burnt notes and dark chocolate filling the body and a subtle fruit and orange lift underneath. The texture is dense and oily, the finish dry and woody with a minty, black-tea edge. The reduced strength and the cocoa richness give it more balance than the full-proof releases, so the dirt registers without becoming overwhelming. A benchmark heavy Caroni for drinkers who want the character with a little more poise.
