Velier Caroni 100% Rum 15 HTR 1998

Velier Caroni 100% 15 HTR 1998 is a single-vintage bottling from Caroni, the legendary Trinidad distillery that ceased production around 2002 and closed soon after. Luca Gargano of Velier rescued forgotten casks from its warehouses and turned an obscure bulk producer into one of the most mythologised names in rum, bottling at or near cask strength with tropical ageing and no additives. This is an HTR, the prized Heavy Trinidad Rum mark collectors chase.

Fifteen years of tropical maturation in ex-bourbon oak give the archetypal heavy Caroni signature: tar, leather, roasted wood and burnt sugar, with dried fruit, smoke and a peppery, woody finish. The style is oily, dense and unmistakably industrial in the best sense, savoury rather than sweet. Reduced to 52% it is more approachable than the fiercest releases while keeping real depth, an accessible and characterful way into Caroni for a palate ready for it.
