A twelve-year Caroni from Velier at 50%, the rescued closed Trinidad distillery in its heavy marque, full of diesel, tar, rubber and wood wrapped in vanilla and faint fruit, intense yet drinkable and a sound entry into the Caroni style.
Description
This is single-distillery Caroni from Velier, drawn from the closed Trinidad distillery whose abandoned stocks Luca Gargano rescued and made famous. Distilled in 2000 from molasses and aged twelve years with part of that maturation in Guyana, it is a heavy Trinidad marque bottled unsweetened, a younger and gentler proof than the long-aged cask strength releases.
The classic Caroni dirt is all present, diesel, tar and rubber meeting leather and wood, but here it is wrapped in vanilla and a subtle fruity sweetness that keeps it from going to extremes. At 50% it is intense but surprisingly drinkable, which is exactly why it works as a reference point for anyone trying to understand what the industrial Caroni profile means. For the funk-curious ready to explore beyond Jamaican esters, this is a sound, characterful starting bottle from one of rum's most collected names.
