A 29 year old tropically aged Appleton selected by Velier from the 1993 vintage, bottled unsweetened at a robust 63%, dry and intensely woody with mint, black tea, leather, dark fruit and toasted oak.
Description
This Hearts Collection bottling is a 1993 Appleton Estate selected by Velier, the Genoese house known for full-proof, additive-free Caribbean rum. It is pot still Jamaican rum carried to twenty-nine years entirely under tropical ageing, a long stretch in Jamaica's warm climate that brings deep wood influence and a high concentration of character into the glass.
This is the dry, old-Jamaican end of the spectrum rather than bright ester funk. The nose blends glue, wood, banana and vanilla, the palate turns roasted, woody and minty with barrel depth, and the finish carries menthol, licorice, black tea and toasted oak. Bottled at 63% with nothing added, it is powerful and tannic, closer in feel to an old Demerara or a dry, oak-driven style than to a fruit-forward Jamaican, and it needs air and patience to show its best. A demanding, complex pour for seasoned drinkers who want serious age, wood and menthol-tea depth in a Jamaican frame.
