An ancient 37 Year Old Appleton at 63%, all old oak, polish, bitter coffee and dried fruit, a dry, woody pot still survivor for drinkers who prize aged wood over juicy tropical fruit.
Description
From Velier's Hearts Collection, this is a 1984 Appleton pot still rum bottled at 37 years and 63%. Appleton is Jamaica's biggest and most mainstream house, but Velier's selection here is anything but everyday, a very old single mark cask from one of the most respected names in collectible rum.
This is the woodiest extreme of Jamaican ageing. Nearly four decades, partly under tropical heat, have pushed it well past fruit and into old oak, fresh resin and polish, with bitter coffee, dark chocolate, leather and dried fruit on a long, tannic, tobacco heavy finish. Unsweetened and bottled at full strength, it is a divisive, history in a glass pour best opened slowly with water, made for drinkers who chase very old, dry, oak driven rum rather than balance or sweetness.
