Description
Vallobera, the project of Javier San Pedro Randez, makes this Crianza from Tempranillo in La Rioja. Tempranillo is the backbone grape of the region, ripening early on Rioja's mix of clay-limestone and alluvial soils, which hold moisture through the dry summers and feed the grape's red fruit and moderate acidity. The continental climate, tempered by Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, gives a long, even ripening that keeps the fruit fresh. The wine is aged fourteen months in oak barrels, the Crianza framework that defines the traditional Rioja style: slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the tannins and adds vanilla, spice and a savoury, cedary depth while the fruit is still in front. The colour is an intense ruby. The nose shows ripe plum and blackberry with red berries and cherry over vanilla, dried herbs and leather. The palate is medium to full bodied, the soft, ripe tannin and fresh acidity carrying the fruit and oak spice to a smooth, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18C; it suits roast lamb, grilled pork and aged cheese.
