Description
This Port Mourant 1997 is a single cask Guyanese rum bottled by Valinch & Mallet and released in 2022. The rum was distilled in 1997 at the Port Mourant distillation site, using the historic double wooden pot still now housed at Diamond Distillery, a still renowned for producing heavy, structured distillate capable of extended ageing.
Produced from molasses, the rum was matured in oak for a total of twenty five years before bottling. While the exact breakdown of tropical versus continental ageing is not specified for this release, the long maturation period reflects the traditional Demerara approach to producing deeply structured, long lived rums.
Bottled at cask strength at 50.3 percent ABV, the rum is presented without dilution. The profile is consistent with mature Port Mourant distillate, favouring depth, weight, and oak driven complexity over sweetness or finishing techniques. With an outturn of just 64 bottles, this is a tightly limited single cask release drawn from one of Guyana’s most historically significant rum stills.
