A 35-year continental Hampden from Valinch and Mallet, balancing massive tropical-fruit ester with elegant old oak, cherry, pastry and a licorice-and-lemon close, bottled unsweetened from a single 1983 cask at 55.3%.
Description
This is one of the rarest expressions of Hampden a drinker is likely to meet: distilled in 1983, aged 35 years in Europe and bottled by Italian house Valinch and Mallet from a single ex-bourbon cask at 55.3%. Continental ageing means the spirit matured slowly in cool conditions, so even after three and a half decades the fruit survives.
Molasses-based and from the classic double-retort pot still, it pours with pineapple, cherry and pastry on the nose, then a wave of tropical-fruit ester and papaya on the palate that the long maturation has softened rather than smothered. Fine old oak, lemon and licorice carry a graceful finish. Where younger Hampden shouts, this one drinks with depth and refinement while keeping its funky core intact, the ABV remarkably soft and integrated for its age. A contemplative pour, best slow and neat.
