    750 ml / 13.2%

    $51

Graciano is a rare Rioja grape, barely 2 percent of the region’s vines, prized for its acidity and ageing potential. Valenciso bottle it on its own, aged 16 months in new Caucasian oak, showing dark plum, black pepper and a firm savoury line.

Graciano has long been native to Rioja, traditionally used in small amounts to lift Tempranillo blends with acidity and colour. According to the D.O.Ca. Rioja it accounts for only around 2 percent of the region's vineyards, but producers like Valenciso are bottling it as a single variety to show its character. This 2020 is aged for 16 months in new oak from the Caucasus. The grape ripens late and holds high natural acidity, which gives the wine its freshness and long ageing potential; the new oak adds structure and a fine spine of tannin while contributing measured spice and toast. The fruit is farmed organically and sustainably. The wine is deep ruby with aromas of dark plum, blackberry, black pepper and dried Mediterranean herbs framed by cedar and oak. The palate is firm and savoury, with bright acidity, dark fruit and a peppery, earthy finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant young bottles for an hour. It is built for roast and braised meats and game.
