Val do Galir is an unoaked Godello from old vineyards in Valdeorras, planted on slate and granite above 600 metres. Atlantic freshness gives wild apple, citrus, gentle herbs and a clear wet-stone minerality on a dry, precise palate.
Description
Virgen del Galir is a small Galician winery founded in 2002 in Éntoma, in the D.O. Valdeorras, working recovered vineyards to make fresh, mineral wines. This Godello comes from old vines set on slate and granite soils at more than 600 metres, an altitude that brings wide day-to-night temperature swings. That diurnal range slows ripening and locks in acidity and aromatic detail, while the slate subsoil is the source of the wine's pronounced stony character. The grapes are made without oak, in stainless steel, so nothing stands between the fruit and the terroir. It shows pale lemon with green glints, a nose of wild apple, pear, citrus, gentle herbs and a clear mineral note of wet stone. The palate is dry, precise and medium bodied, with green apple and citrus fruit over a firm mineral line, finishing clean and long. The absence of oak keeps this a bright, Atlantic style Godello with clarity and freshness. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. It suits grilled white fish, shellfish, fresh salads and young cheeses, and makes a fine aperitif.
