Description
Vadio Tinto is an organic red made from Baga by Luis Patrao, who founded his Vadio project in the village of Poutena in Bairrada after working in Portugal, Australia, California and Chile. Baga is Bairrada's signature variety, a thick-skinned grape high in tannin and acidity that gives structured, ageworthy reds. The vines grow on sandy and limestone soils in a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate, which keeps the wine fresh and firm rather than heavy, at a moderate 13 per cent alcohol. The wine is aged for eighteen months in used French oak barrels, which soften the tannins and add texture while leaving the fruit and acidity to lead. Expect a deep ruby colour, a nose of red berries, cherry and dried herbs with an earthy, faintly leathery edge, and a palate that is savoury and firm, with grainy tannins, high acidity and a long, dry finish. This is a traditional food red rather than a soft, fruity one. Serve at 16 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast game, beef and grilled pork.
