Golden-yellow rather than clear, this Canadian gin draws its colour and character from six Arctic botanicals hand-picked on Quebec’s Ungava Peninsula. Cloudberry, crowberry, wild rosehip and Labrador tea give fruity, herbal, faintly tart notes over the juniper. Nordic, complex and unmistakably its own thing.
Description
Ungava breaks every expectation of what gin should look like. Its bright golden hue comes from six Arctic botanicals, traditionally harvested across the untouched Ungava Peninsula in northern Quebec: wild rosehip, cloudberry, crowberry, Labrador tea and arctic tea, set against juniper. The spirit is distilled in the classic way, then macerated with these natural ingredients, which is what gives it both that vivid colour and its layered, sub-Arctic flavour.
The nose is intensely junipery with floral, berried and wild-herb nuances. The palate is complex and harmonious, fresh herbs and mild spice carrying a subtle berry sweetness, all at 43.1%. The finish is long and slightly dry, with a gentle bitterness and a spiced tail. Pour it into a gin and tonic with a mild tonic and a few fresh berries, or let its Nordic edge sharpen a gin sour.
