A Port Mourant distillate bottled by Decadent Drinks for its Rum Sponge line, off the double wooden pot still and finished in port, fruity with pear, lemon and floral notes over green fruit, esters and minty oak at 47.6%.
Description
This 1993 rum comes from the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, the greenheart behemoth that no modern still can replicate, here bottled by Decadent Drinks under its sought after Rum Sponge label. Despite the heavy still, this expression leans to the brighter, fruitier side of the marque, twenty seven years old and given a finishing period in port casks. It carries the Uitvlugt and Port Mourant lineage that marks the older Guyanese estates.
Molasses based and matured in ex-bourbon before the port finish, it noses on pear, tropical fruit, lemon and a floral lift, with the green fruit and ester character of a livelier PM. The palate is earthy and flowery with the wood building underneath, and the finish runs minty and fruity over barrel. Bottled at 47.6% without sweetening, it shows the estate's signature olive and anise notes only faintly, favouring fresh fruit and balance over the oiliest, tar heavy expression of the style.
