Uggiano make this Chianti Classico from Sangiovese with a little Canaiolo in the hills of Tuscany. Twelve months in wood round out a classic red of ripe black cherry, plum, violet and a savoury, earthy edge.
Description
Uggiano Roccialta Chianti Classico is a Tuscan red from Azienda Uggiano, built on Sangiovese with a complementary share of Canaiolo. The estate traces its modern history to the 1970s, when French trained oenologist Giuseppe Losapio settled in the Chianti hills, and its approach balances tradition with measured modern technique rather than choosing between them. Sangiovese is the defining grape of the zone, prized for its bright acidity, firm tannin and savoury character, while Canaiolo softens the blend and adds suppleness. The Chianti Classico hills, with their galestro and limestone soils and warm days cooled by altitude, give fruit that ripens fully while holding the acidity that makes these wines such good companions at the table. Twelve months in wood settle the tannins and add a light frame of spice. The colour is ruby with a garnet edge. The nose offers ripe black cherry and plum with violet, dried herb and a touch of oak. The palate is medium bodied and savoury, with tangy red fruit, fine grained tannins, earthy depth and a fresh, food friendly finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with tomato rich pasta, grilled meats and aged cheese.
