Comando G makes Tumba del Rey Moro from old Garnacha vines high in the Sierra de Gredos, west of Madrid. The plot sits on a near-vertical granite slope, farmed biodynamically. Twelve months in French oak keeps it pale and perfumed, with red berries, rose and wild herbs.

Description
Tumba del Rey Moro is a single-variety Garnacha from Comando G, a project set up to revive old Garnacha vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos, in the mountains west of Madrid. The grapes come from ancient vines on a slope with a fifty per cent gradient, almost vertical, where the soil is built from large granite stones. Granite is poor and free-draining, and the altitude brings cool nights and a wide swing between day and night temperatures, which slows ripening and holds on to acidity and aromatics. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, and the wine is made with minimal handling. Twelve months in French oak adds a light frame while leaving the fruit clear and lifted. The result is pale in colour and perfumed rather than heavy, with red berries, fresh cherry, rose petal and wild mountain herbs, set against a fine mineral line from the granite. The palate is light to medium bodied, with bright acidity, gentle tannins and a long, savoury finish. Serve cool, around 14 to 15 degrees, in a large glass. It suits roast poultry and game birds.
