Description
Murray McDavid bottled this Tullibardine single malt, bottled at 44.5%. Tullibardine, first built in 1949 in the southern Highlands near Gleneagles, is known for its wine cask finishes. It was founded by the distillery architect William Delme-Evans, the first new distillery in Scotland after the war.
The spirit was run through the distillery's compact copper stills, to build a honeyed, malty character. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the soft make. Carrying no age, it leans on honey, vanilla and a soft toffee. Long, gentle ageing turns the fresh fruit towards honey and a soft spice. Part of the old estate was turned into a retail outlet during the lean years. The distillery sits just off the A9 near Gleneagles, one of Scotland's more accessible. Under French wine ownership the distillery has leaned into its cask finishes.
Reduced to 44.5%, it is soft. The Pedro Ximenez lends raisin, date and treacle, and oats, honey and a touch of ginger sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. It is gentle and honeyed, the soft spirit shining through. A honeyed, lightly spiced finish lingers. This is a wine finished Highland malt from Blackford.
