Distilled in 1949 at the old Tullamore distillery in Co. Offaly, silent since 1954, this single pot still whiskey spent forty one years in oak before Cadenhead’s bottled it in 1991 at a towering 65.6% cask strength for the Dutch market.

Description
The original Tullamore distillery, founded in 1829 and run for generations by the Williams family, fell silent in 1954, so anything carrying a 1949 distillation date is genuine heritage stock. This is a single pot still whiskey, the old Irish style built on malted and unmalted barley, laid down in Co. Offaly and later selected by the Scottish independent bottler Cadenhead's for a 1991 release aimed at the Netherlands.
Four decades in oak is a long haul for any spirit, and this one emerged at a formidable 65.6%, bottled without dilution straight from the cask. The ex-bourbon oak would have handed over vanilla, dried orchard fruit and a resinous, waxy depth, while the pot still base keeps its peppery, gingery spine even after forty one years. Water is more suggestion than option here, a snapshot of a distillery Ireland lost.
