A 1982 vintage Martinique agricole from Trois Rivieres at 45%, still vivid despite its gentle strength, with cherry, cinnamon and apple over cedar wood, dried fruit and a peppery, faintly smoky finish.
Description
Trois Rivieres traces its estate to 1660 and has made rum for well over a century, now distilled at the La Mauny site. This 1982 is a vintage Martinique agricole from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice on a column still, an old release that shows how much character tropical ageing can pack into a rum bottled at a modest strength.
Held at 45% and unsweetened in the agricole tradition, it opens with cherry, cinnamon, apple and a clear ester lift, then drinks on cedar wood, cherry, dried fruit and warm cinnamon before a finish of cedar, black pepper, vanilla and a wisp of smoke. The relatively low proof never reads as thin given the depth of fruit and spice, and the profile stays well balanced, shifting between fruit, spice and gentle smoke. A composed older agricole for slow neat sipping, rewarding drinkers who value evolution and poise over raw power.
