A cask strength Seychelles pot still rhum from fresh cane juice, rested in an ex Pineau des Charentes cask that lends raisin and red fruit over cinnamon, oak and a peppery, spirit forward snap at 54.8%.
Description
The second entry in Takamaka's Le Clos series, this single cask was distilled at the Trois Freres distillery on Mahe from fresh pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses, the agricole approach that keeps grassy, green cane character in the spirit. Bottled at a full 54.8% from the 2019 vintage, it shows the estate reaching for more ambition than its standard range, an unsweetened pot still rum given roughly three years in a former Pineau des Charentes cask.
That sweet wine cask is the signature here, drawing raisin and red fruit across a core of cinnamon, oak and dried grape. The palate runs peppery and a touch sharp, with the cask strength alcohol still fairly assertive rather than fully folded in, so a few drops of water help it settle. A characterful and slightly wild island rhum for drinkers who like their cane juice young, dry and spice driven.
