Mesquida Mora make Trispol on Mallorca from the native Callet with Cabernet Franc and Syrah, farmed biodynamically. Twelve months in French and American oak give a warm, savoury island red of red berries, plum, pepper and wild Mediterranean herbs.
Description
Trispol is a red from Mesquida Mora, made in the VT Mallorca zone on the eastern side of the island. The winery sits at Porrera and has farmed biodynamically since it was founded in 2004, using native cover crops and compost and avoiding the chemicals that interfere with natural ripening. The blend joins the indigenous Callet with Cabernet Franc and Syrah, a mix that pairs local character with structure and spice. Mallorca's warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by sea breezes, ripens the fruit fully, while the island's varied limestone and clay soils give the wine its savoury, herbal edge. Fermentation on skins draws out the colour, ripe tannin and dark fruit, and the wine then ages twelve months in French and American oak, the two woods together rounding the texture and adding a frame of sweet spice and cedar through slow oxygen exchange. The 2023 is bright, deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe red and black berries, plum and black pepper over dried herbs and a warm, earthy note. The palate is medium to full and generous at fourteen percent, with supple tannin and a savoury, herb-tinged finish. Serve at 16 to 18C. It pairs with grilled lamb, beef and roasted vegetables.
