A honey-sweetened Canary Islands cane-juice rum from Ron Aldea, bottled by Tres Hombres after a sail-cargo voyage, dominated by beeswax and honey with a citrus edge, frankly sweet and spirity at 45.1%.
Description
This Ron y Miel is a collaboration between Ron Aldea, a cane-juice distillery on La Palma in the Canary Islands, and Tres Hombres, whose rums travel by sailing ship as engine-free cargo. The name says it plainly, ron y miel means rum and honey, and organic honey is added to this column-still spirit, bottled at 45.1%.
The honey dominates from the first sniff, the nose thick with beeswax and honey, the palate honeyed with a citrus edge, the finish fruity and a touch alcoholic. This is openly a honey-sweetened, spiced-style rum rather than a dry cane-juice sipper, and it should be taken that way. The sweetness sits front and centre, so it suits those who actively want a honeyed drink, served neat for a sweet sip or stirred into a warming cocktail, rather than anyone seeking the grassy snap of an unsweetened agricole.
