A single cask of La Favorite agricole bottled at 44% for the Tres Hombres sailing-cargo project, six years in ex-bourbon giving tropical fruit and roasted oak up front, then cinnamon, nutmeg and cocoa over a spiced finish.
Description
Tres Hombres La Favorite Ed. 033 Captain's Choice 2013 is a single-cask aged agricole from La Favorite, one of the last family-run distilleries in Martinique, selected by Tres Hombres, the engineless sailing vessel that ships its rum across the Atlantic under sail. Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice and matured around six years in an ex-bourbon barrel, it carries no added sugar.
The nose blends tropical fruit and fresh cane with roasted, woody notes. The palate is firmly oak-driven, with cinnamon, nutmeg and a roasted character over the agricole base, and the finish brings cocoa, wood, spice and oak. There is a natural, gentle sweetness from the spirit and cask rather than dosage, alongside a slight spicy lift. Bottled at 44%, this is a wood-forward aged agricole where the bourbon barrel does much of the talking, a warming, spice-led sipper for drinkers who enjoy oak influence and the romance of a wind-powered crossing.
