Description
Trénel Saint-Véran L'Homonyme is an organic single-variety Chardonnay from the Mâconnais, sourced from the Clos des Poncetys plots at Davayé, on the border of Pouilly-Fuissé. The soils are red clay over a limestone bedrock, a combination that gives the wine both flesh and cut and underpins its ageing potential. The vines are around 55 years old, and older roots reach deeper for a more even, concentrated crop. After a whole-cluster press the wine is fermented and then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels. That extended time in wood, with the wine resting on its lees, builds texture through gradual autolysis and mannoprotein release, while slow oxygen exchange through the barrel rounds the palate and adds a light toasty, spiced frame. Malolactic fermentation softens the acidity into a creamy line. The colour is bright gold. The nose shows white flowers, ripe pear and citrus, with a discreet toasted note. The palate is full and mineral, textured but fresh, with a long saline finish. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees in a white wine glass.
