Trénel Fleurie 2023

Trénel produces this Fleurie in the Beaujolais cru of the same name, drawing on Gamay vines more than 45 years old across two plots. La Madone lies beside its namesake chapel, while Les Moriers sits where pink granite sands blend with silty clay and alluvial soils. Granite is the signature of the better Beaujolais crus, giving wines that are perfumed and fine rather than heavy, and the old vines add concentration and depth. The grapes are macerated as whole bunches for eight days, a semi-carbonic style that builds aromatic lift and bright red fruit while keeping tannins soft. After pressing, the wine completes alcoholic fermentation and is then aged before bottling. The colour is bright crimson. The nose is floral and fresh, with cherry, raspberry, rose and a hint of thyme. The palate is light to medium bodied, with juicy acidity, supple tannins and a peppery, mineral finish that reflects the granite soils. Fleurie is among the most floral and elegant of the crus, and this bottling shows that character. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees, lightly chilled. It suits charcuterie, roast pork and poultry.
