Trénel makes this Coteaux Bourguignons in Burgundy from Gamay grown on 55-year-old vines over clay and limestone. Whole-bunch carbonic maceration and unfiltered bottling give a bright, juicy red of cherry, raspberry and crunchy red fruit.
Description
Trénel is a Burgundy house, and this Coteaux Bourguignons is a single-variety Gamay drawn from vines averaging 55 years of age on the clay and limestone soils typical of the region. The older vines carry deep roots and naturally low yields, which concentrate fruit and lend the wine more depth than its everyday appellation suggests. Limestone holds water and reflects in the bright acidity, while the clay component adds a little flesh to the mid palate. In the cellar the whole bunches macerate for eight to ten days by carbonic maceration, where fermentation begins inside intact berries in a carbon dioxide rich environment. This intracellular process extracts colour and primary fruit with very little tannin, giving the lifted, juicy character the method is known for. The wine is then pressed, finishes alcoholic fermentation and is bottled unfiltered to preserve texture and aroma. It pours a bright translucent ruby. The nose leads with cherry and raspberry over a light floral edge, and the palate is fresh and supple, with crunchy red fruit, soft tannin and a clean, lively finish. Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 15 degrees. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and lighter pork dishes.
