Description
Bodegas y Vinedos Rodrigo Mendez works in Rias Baixas in Galicia, a young winery led by winemaker Rodrigo Mendez, who has collaborated with Raul Perez and works indigenous grapes by traditional methods. Tras da Canda Tinto blends the native red varieties Caino Tinto, Loureiro and Espadeiro from young vines on granitic, sandy soils. The Atlantic climate is cool and wet, and the granite gives these Galician reds their marked acidity, light frame and mineral edge. The wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, which rounds the texture through slow oxygen exchange without covering the fresh fruit. The colour is bright, light ruby. The nose shows red currant, raspberry, crushed herbs and a stony, saline note. The palate is light bodied and fresh, with brisk acidity, fine tannin and a savoury, mineral finish. This is an Atlantic red built on freshness rather than weight. Serve cool at 14 to 15 degrees. It pairs with grilled oily fish, roast poultry and charcuterie, and works with green vegetable dishes.
